The Most Frustrating Dog Training Tool (And Why You Absolutely Need It) by Anna Hope
If you caught my recent video, you’ll know the caption was entirely accurate: "How I spend 99.9% of my dog training time."
The glamorous reality of being a dog trainer is that a huge chunk of my day is spent standing in a Rugby field, frantically untangling a 5-metre wet long line from around my own ankles, a bush, or a very confused spaniel.
Let’s be brutally honest: long lines can be a massive pain.
They get muddy, they give you rope burn if you aren't careful, and they have a magical ability to tie themselves into Boy Scout knots the second you put them in the boot of your car.
So, why on earth do I insist on using them?
The Ultimate Safety Net
Because despite the tangles, a long line is the single most essential piece of dog training kit for building a confident, sociable, and easy-to-manage dog.
When you are teaching a reliable recall, you cannot just unclip the lead, cross your fingers, and hope for the best. If your dog ignores you and runs off to chase a squirrel or jump on a stranger, they have just rewarded themselves for ignoring your call.
The long line bridges that terrifying gap between being safely on a short lead and being completely free. It allows your dog to feel like they are off-lead, giving them the freedom to sniff, explore, and be a dog. But if they decide to suddenly go deaf when you call their name, you can simply step on the line.
Short-Term Hassle for Long-Term Freedom
Yes, you will get muddy hands for a few weeks. Yes, you will spend a bit of your walk reeling it in and letting it out. But that temporary hassle is what buys you years of stress-free, off-lead walks in the future.
